俄羅斯總統普京表示，早前非法進入俄羅斯克里米亞附近領海的英國軍艦，是為了仔細觀察俄羅斯軍方的反應，認為英方的行動明顯是挑釁，但認為即使俄方在克里米亞附近擊沉英國驅逐艦，世界亦不太可能處於第三次世界大戰的邊緣。
普京出席年度電視問答環節時又說，俄羅斯和烏克蘭的關係密切，他並非拒絕與烏克蘭總統澤連斯基會面，但有必要事先了解有什麼可以談。普京認為，澤連斯基將國家控制權交給外國管理，美國、德國和法國在某程度上，都作出關鍵決定，質疑與澤連斯基會面有什麼用。
